Any details
available on the Harmen DeVries family while living in Holland,
Lancaster, would be appreciated.
Submitted by Curtis Menning
The first photo is of Harmen (Herman) DeVries who lived in Holland,
Lancaster, Nebraska around 1883 - 1886 where his first two children
were born. They later moved to Iowa and finally settled in South
Dakota during the rush to establish South Dakota as a farming state.
He is buried in South Dakota as well as several of his children.
The second photo is of the Harmen
(Herman) DeVries family taken later in South Dakota.

Family Top row
Gerrit Devries b: Sep 1878 Pella Iowa
Jane Devries b: 2 Sep 1883 Holland, Lancaster, Nebraska (my
grandmother)
Everette DeVries b: Feb 1881 Holland, Lancaster, Nebraska -
occupation driller
Herman DeVries b: 18 Nov 1886 Holland, Lancaster, Nebraska
Front row:
Harmen DeVries b: 14 Nov 1842 The Netherlands occupation farmer
John DeVries b: Dec 1891 Holland, Lancaster, Nebraska became a
farmer
Fennigje Stouwdam b: 10 Jul 1854 Oldebroek, Gelderland, Netherlands
The third photo is of the family
of the brother to Harmen DeVries. I am not certain the brother
lived in Nebraska but the research on their families is made
difficult by the fact that Harmen and his brother were two of
triplets. Note the badge and the similar faces on the brothers - but
then "we Dutch folks all look alike anyway."
I still have not ascertained precisely who the
lady is in the photo. I believe her to be either the Mother, (perhaps a grandmother) of Harmen DeVries and Evert DeVries mentioned on your site.
Notice the photo was actually taken in Lancaster County and was forwarded to me 30 years ago by someone who also had the last name of DeVries, but now believe the original owner of the photo has since deceased and the information as to who she might be has been lost.
